Climate Change
linea

Climate change is a global challenge requiring the active cooperation of all sectors in mitigating its effects.

Grupo SOS, keenly aware of the importance of the problem, has decided to make this one of its top priorities, working out practical strategies and action plans.

Year 2007

Policy on reducing CO2 emissions

Biomass: Grupo SOS is firmly convinced of its ability to obtain energy from the by-products of its manufacturing centres.
  Achievements:

  1. In 2007 the Group installed at the Andújar plant a new biomass (sunflower husk) furnace capable of generating 7,900,000 Kcal/h.
  2. Work continues on using by-products as alternatives to fossil fuels. Currently a study is being undertaken on the viability of installing equipment capable of converting burnt rice husks into electric energy.

Land Project: Grupo SOS is heading a worldwide project designed to foment the planting of high-yield olive farms, known as the Land Project. This system of growing olives will considerably enhance the ability of plants to absorb CO2 in comparison with conventional olive groves.
  Achievements:

  1. By year's end 1,721 hectares had been planted using the new system. This is equivalent to nearly three and half million olive trees in Spain, Portugal and Morocco planted in hedgerows as opposed to existing standalone tree distribution. Based on the average absorption of CO2 by these trees, it is estimated that the present plantation can absorb 12,042 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to 17% of the total CO2 emissions of the Grupo SOS in 2007.

Details

Below we give details of the CO2 emissions of the Group per product division.
